Consequences?

Waste products produced during daytime are not adequately disposed off, causing bothersome symptoms. Varicose veins are most common in women between the ages of 20 and 75. As many as 64% of women in this age group suffer from varicose veins. It is much less common in men. Varicose veins are caused by a hereditary predisposition, being overweight or by working almost immobile for longer periods of time.

Symptoms

  • Visibly swollen veins on the legs

  • Tired legs

  • Restless legs

  • Itching or pain in the legs

  • Discoloration of the ankles, swelling around the ankles

  • Burning sensation in the feet

Contributing factors

  • Age

  • Pregnancy

  • Heredity

  • Thrombosis

  • Obesity

  • Prolonged standing

The symptoms are often underestimated because in the early stages there are hardly any visible defects. In time, not only the cosmetic aspect with discoloration and visible varicose veins is an issue, but due to high blood pressure, excess fluid escapes from the vessels: swelling occurs due to fluid accumulation around the ankles, and so-called venous edema develops.

If a person continues to walk around with varicose veins for too long, the condition will continue to spread with an increasing chance of developing some of the complications mentioned earlier. Profuse bleeding, venous inflammation,  a thrombosis and finally the ulcerated so-called "open leg" can also result from a neglected varicose vein disease. The earlier the treatment is initiated for swelling (edema), the lower the chance of developing complications. Wearing an elastic stocking can be helpful in this regard in certain circumstances.

Varicose veins are usually caused by a hereditary predisposition. This means that there is a high chance that varicose veins will reappear, regardless of what treatment is given. What we can do for you is treat the result, the varicose veins. Even after surgery, varicose veins can reappear after some time. However, measures and advice can be given to prevent the condition to some extent and to prevent its extension. We cannot emphasize enough that the earlier you get the condition treated, the better it is. Especially since early treatment will be less invasive and shorter.

If you are in doubt whether your symptoms are caused by varicose veins, you can always start off with an open-ended consult and possibly additional ultrasound examination first.
